Earning your insurance license is the first step to becoming an insurance agent in Indiana. A license is required to sell life insurance, car insurance, home insurance, or business insurance.

The first step to getting licensed is taking an insurance pre-license course. Classes are available online or in person. These courses are created specifically to give you the skills you need to pass the state licensing test. The types of licenses you choose to earn, also known as “lines of authority”, will determine which courses you take.

Each line of authority in Indiana requires twenty hours of pre-license education. Example: If you want to get a Property and Casualty license, you must take forty hours of pre-licensing.

You will receive a certificate upon completion of the course; the certificate is required to take the state exam.

After completing your pre-license coursework, you will take the insurance exam. An exam for each line of insurance you wish to carry is required.

You will take the test in a controlled environment with an official watching you. The fee for each attempt of the exams is $69.  A photo ID and the original pre-license education certificate is required to take the test.

The Indiana Life, Accident, and Health test is 150 questions long. You have three hours to complete it. The Indiana Property and Casualty test is 150 questions long. You have three hours to complete it, as well. Each exam requires a minimum of 70% correct answers to pass.

It is recommended that you study for one exam at a time. After passing one exam, they recommend that you start on your next line. The exams are difficult enough on their own without confusing information from one line to another.

Once you have completed your exams and fingerprinting, you are ready to apply for your license. If you have more than one line of authority that you have passed the exam for, be sure to apply for each of those lines.

The fee for an online application is $40, plus a small transaction fee. If you wish to add a line of authority to your license later, then you will pay the same $40, plus a transaction fee. Fill out your online application on either the NIPR Indiana Insurance page or the Sircon Indiana page.

Once you have submitted your application and have filled all the other requirements, your license application will be reviewed by the state. Your background check will be reviewed.

If everything is to acceptable, your license should be issued. The review normally takes between five to seven business days to complete. After the review, you will receive an email with verification that your license has been issued.
